#25 Old Dominion 82, Delaware 55
January 11, 2002

Freshman Julie Sailer paced the Hens with 16 points off the bench

NEWARK, DE -- Senior forward Hamchetou Maiga scored a game-high 21 points and pulled nine rebounds and junior guard Okeisha Howard added 19 points as No. 25 ranked Old Dominion snapped the University of Delaware' three-year home winning streak with an 82-55 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Monarchs, coming off a 74-62 loss to No. 2 Tennessee Tuesday night, extended their CAA winning streak to 12 games over two seasons as they improved to 8-5, 5-0 CAA. The Blue Hens, who have lost consecutive games for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, had their school record 22-game home winning streak snapped and fell to 8-4, 2-2 CAA. The loss was Delaware's first at home since a 73-58 setback to Maine back on January 4, 2000.

Delaware freshman Julie Sailer came off the bench to lead the Blue Hens with 16 points while guards Megan Dellegrotti and Allison Trapp each added 11 points. The game was played before an enthusiastic BCC women's single game record crowd of 2,642.

The Monarchs, who have captured 10 straight CAA titles, led from start to finish as they handed CAA newcomer Delaware its worst loss since an 89-61 setback to George Mason early last season. The Blue Hens were hurt by 25 turnovers, including 10 by Dellegrotti, and 32.7 percent shooting from the field (18 of 55). Delaware's starting frontcourt connected on just 3 of 19 shots as the quicker Monarchs dominated inside. Lucienne Berthieu added seven points and nine rebounds and Sharron Francis dished out eight assists to pace the Old Dominion effort.

Old Dominion jumped out to a 21-4 lead in the first seven minutes of the contest and never looked back. The Monarchs led 39-22 at halftime thanks to 16 of 26 shooting from the field.

But the Hens never gave up in the second half and eventually cut the Old Dominion lead to its lowest since early in the opening half at 13 points at 54-41 with 10:54 left to play. Sailer scored five of Delaware's nine points in the 9-2 run to spark the comeback.

The Blue Hens still trailed by just 14 points at 61-47 with 7:34 left to play but could never get closer. The Monarchs scored the last 11 points of the game and held the Blue Hens scoreless over the last three minutes for the final tally.

Delaware continues CAA play Sunday at Towson while Old Dominion travels to George Mason.
