Rible Hits For
Season-High 24 Points as
Tina Martin Earns
100th Win at UD
Delaware
head coach Tina Martin picked up her 100th win at
the helm of the Blue
Hens
|
HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Senior forward
Christina Rible (Red Bank Regional/Little Silver, NJ)
led the way with a season-high 24 points and 10 rebounds for
her 10th double-double of the season as the University of
Delaware women's basketball team helped head coach Tina
Martin earn her 100th career victory with a 64-52
Colonial Athletic Association victory Friday night at
Hofstra Arena.
The Blue Hens (22-5, 15-3 CAA) completed
the regular season by winning their fifth straight game and
their 14th in the last 15 outings. Delaware will be the No.
2 seed in next week's CAA Tournament at Norfolk, VA and will
take on either Drexel, Towson, or Hofstra in the
quarterfinals March 7 at 12 noon. The Hens' 22 wins is the
second highest total in school history.
Hofstra (9-18, 6-12) lost despite having
three players score in double figures as Tara Dilworth came
off the bench to post 14 points and a team-high seven
rebounds while guard Jen Brickey had 15 points and forward
Kimberley Coke chipped in with 11. The Pride will be either
the No. 7 or 8 seed in the CAA Play-In round and will play
either No. 9 William & Mary or No. 10 Towson. Official
pairings will be announced on Saturday.
"This was a great win to end the regular
season, " said Martin, the 2001 America East Coach of the
Year who led Delaware to a 26-5 record and its first NCAA
Tournament appearance a year ago and improved to 100-69 in
her sixth season. "I'm proud of this team in so many ways.
Winning 22 games is quite an accomplishment. We played very
consistently, especially in the second half. This is a good
way to get some momentum heading into the CAA Tournament. As
for the 100 wins, it is definitely a staff accomplishment.
(Associate head coach) Jeanine Radice has been with
me the entire way and deserves just as much recognition.
We've been blessed with some outstanding
players."
Just the third coach in UD women's
basketball history, Martin is the second to reach 100 wins
and reached the milestone in 169 games. All-time UD win
leader Joyce Perry (266-212 in 1978-96) reached the
100-win plateau in 184 games.
Rible connected on 9 of 16 field goals
and converted all six free throws for her season-high 24
points, her fourth 20-point effort of the season. The league
leader in rebounding with 9.6 per game, Rible posted her
13th double digit rebounding performance of the season and
upped her career total to 949, fourth best all-time at
Delaware. She reached 1,000 points earlier this
season.
Junior guard Allison Trapp added
15 points for the Blue Hens while Megan Dellegrotti
chipped in with nine points and four assists and center
Christine Cole added seven points and eight rebounds.
Delaware overcame 22 turnovers by
outrebounding Hofstra 37-32 and holding the Pride to just
33.3 percent shooting from the field (16 of 48), including
just 3 of 17 from the three-point line. The Blue Hens
continued their torrid foul shooting be converting 20 of 24
tries, including all 17 in the second half.
Hofstra led briefly in the first half
when Coke converted a layup with 13:36 left to put the Pride
up 11-10. It would be the Pride's last lead of the night as
the Hens countered with a 14-5 run with Rible scoring four
baskets during the stretch. The Hens moved out to a 31-24
lead at intermission.
Delaware, which downed Hofstra for the
fifth straight time, scored the first seven points of the
second half, including four by Rible, to extend the lead to
14 points at 38-24 and stayed up by at least seven points
the rest of the way. The Hens, who led by as much as 16 at
one point, stayed on top by hitting 9 of 9 free throws in
the final six minutes of play when they managed just one
field goal.
