NORFOLK, VA -- Freshman Julie
Sailer nailed two free throws with eight seconds left in
regulation to send the game into overtime and Delaware took
control early in the extra session to survive a first round
scare and down Drexel 72-63 in a Colonial Athletic
Association women's basketball tournament quarterfinal game
Thursday afternoon at the Old Dominion
Fieldhouse.
Delaware senior Christina Rible
(Red Bank Regional/Little Silver, NJ) erupted for a
career-high 28 points and pulled 13 rebounds as the No. 2
seed Blue Hens won their sixth straight game and advanced to
the CAA semifinals Friday at 5 p.m. where they will play the
winner of Thursday's quarterfinal game between No. 3 seed
Virginia Commonwealth and No. 6 UNC Wilmington. Drexel, the
No. 7 seed, finished its season with a record of 14-15.
Delaware won all three meetings during the
season.
Senior guard Megan Dellegrotti and
junior guard Allison Trapp each added 13 points to
lead the Blue Hens, who overcame 18 turnovers and 37.1
percent shooting from the field to notch their 15th win in
the last 16 outings since mid-January.
Rible posted her 11th double of the
season and surpassed her previous scoring high of 26 points.
Drexel got 20 points from freshman guard Jessica Copskey and
14 points and 13 rebounds from first team All-CAA forward
Michelle Maslowski.
Delaware overcame an eight-point deficit
at 53-45 with 4:09 left in regulation, outscoring Drexel
10-2 to send the game into overtime. Sailer (Council
Rock/Washington Crossing, PA), the CAA Rookie of the Year
and the league's leading free throw shooter at 88.7 percent,
rebounded a miss by Dellegrotti with 10 seconds left and was
fouled on the way back up. The freshman sank the first free
throw, and following a Drexel timeout, hit the second to
send the game into overtime.
"The first game of a tournament is always
the hardest, but our kids never quit," said Delaware head
coach Tina Martin. "We got down by nine in the second
half and our kids never hung their heads. We played tight
after our initial run and we missed some shots we usually
make. Drexel came into the game with nothing to lose but our
kids, especially our seniors, feel a lot of pressure because
they want to get to the NCAAs or to the NIT. I can't say
enough about the way we battled back. Rible was just
unbelievable, Carrie Timmins and Tracey Howell
gave us a huge lift off the bench, and what can I say about
Julie Sailer. She has ice in her veins. I wasn't even
worried about her shooting those free throws. I knew she
would knock them down."
Delaware, which won its sixth straight
overtime game since 1997, took control early in the extra
period. Rible and Trapp each hit two free throws to break a
57-57 tie, Sailer hit a jumper, Dellegrotti nailed a
three-pointer, and Trapp followed with two more layups as
part of a 13-3 run that put the Hens up 70-60 with 1:16 left
to play.
Rible, a second team All-CAA selection,
scored 15 of her points in the first half as Delaware took a
narrow 23-22 lead into intermission. The Hens came out on
fire, scoring the first 10 points of the game and taking a
15-2 lead eight minutes into the game. The Dragons didn't
hit their first field goal until Copskey nailed a
three-pointer to start a 11-0 run that eventually resulted
in a 17-17 tie with 4:20 left. Delaware hit just three field
goals, all by Rible, in the final 12 minutes of the
half.
Backed by eight early points from
Copskey, Drexel used a 12-2 run early in the second half to
go up by as much as nine points at 40-31 with 12:22 left to
play. The Dragons maintained that lead and held a 53-45
advantage with 4:09 left in regulation but would hit just
one field goal the rest of the way.
The Hens came storming back as Rible hit
a jumper, Dellegrotti completed a three-point play, and
Rible came back with another three-point play with 1:26 left
to cut the lead to 55-53 with 1:52 left.
