Conference Season Comes to a Close in Loss to
Catamounts

BURLINGTON, VT -- The dream of a
perfect season in conference play came to an end for the
University of Delaware women's basketball team Saturday
afternoon as host University of Vermont used some timely
long-range shooting to post a 68-58 America East victory
over the Blue Hens at Patrick Gymnasium.
Dawn Cressman scored 13 points, Rachel
Bryan added 10 points, and the Catamounts (16-10, 12-5)
connected on 8 of 19 three-pointers to post the victory,
snapping the Blue Hens' school record win streak at 17
games.
The Hens (22-4, 16-1), who lost for the
first time since an 89-61 loss at George Mason Dec. 6 and
had a nine-game road win streak snapped, suffered through
their lowest scoring output of the season since a 78-56
setback to George Washington in the season opener. Delaware
managed just 24 second half points after taking a 34-32 lead
at halftime.
Junior forward Christina Rible led
the Blue Hens with 14 points and seven rebounds but was the
only UD player in double figures. Cindy Johnson
scored nine points and Lindsay Davis had eight off
the bench but the Hens shot just 32.3 percent from the field
(10 of 31) in the second half. Christine Cole had a
team-high eight rebounds.
Delaware also had a streak of 24 straight
regular season conference wins snapped, losing for the first
time since a 75-68 setback to New Hampshire Jan. 29,
2000.
"This was a hard-fought game on both
sides," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose
Blue Hens are now 0-12 all-time against Vermont at Patrick
Gymnasium. "We had our opportunities but couldn't come
through. We'll go home and work on the things we need to and
get better. We need to make better decisions in the final
four minutes of the game."
Vermont, which won its fourth straight
game, held Delaware scoreless for the first five minutes of
the second half, going up 40-36 with 14:55 left to play. The
Hens scored three straight baskets to tie the game at 40-40,
but Bryan followed with a jumper and Vermont held the lead
the rest of the way.
Delaware pulled to within three at 55-52
with 5:02 left to play on a three-point play by Davis.
Vermont's Amy Mulligan followed with a jumper and Cressman
added a three-pointer to put out the fire. The Hens later
cut the lead to five at 63-58 with 1:53 left, but Vermont
converted all five of its free throw attempts in the final
53 seconds to ice the win and avenge a 67-55 loss to
Delaware back on Dec. 3.
Delaware, which clinched the America East
regular season title two weeks ago, closes out the regular
season at home Thursday night vs. Hofstra. The America East
Tournament will be held back at the University of Vermont
March 7-10.
