Johnson Sets Career
Scoring Record as Blue Hens Roll
|

Johnson has scored 1,562 career
points

NEWARK, DE -- Senior guard
Cindy Johnson (August Martin/Far Rockaway, NY) scored
a game-high 24 points and became the University of
Delaware's all-time leading scorer as the Blue Hens won
their school record -tying 16th straight game with a 79-54
America East women's basketball victory over Towson Thursday
night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Johnson, a two-time All-America East
selection and a candidate for Player of the Year honors, hit
on 8 of 17 shots from the field and converted all seven free
throws for her 24 points. She hit a layup with 32 seconds
left to play and followed with a free throw to up her career
point total to 1,562, breaking the UD mark of 1,560 set by
Colleen McNamara in 1991-95. Johnson scored 10 points
in the final 1:52 of the game to set the record.
The Blue Hens (21-3, 15-0), who have
already clinched the America East regular season title and
No. 1 seed in the upcoming league tournament, won their 16th
straight game to tie the school record set by the 1980-81
club. Delaware also extended its home winning streak to 18
games and won its 23rd straight America East regular season
game.
Delaware put five scorers in double
figures as Johnson scored 24, Megan Dellegrotti added
13 points, Christina Rible scored 12 points and
pulled nine rebounds, Christine Cole had 11 points
and nine rebounds, and Danielle Leyfert came off the
bench to add 11 points. Lindsay Davis added six
points, nine rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and three
steals in another balanced effort.
Towson (2-21, 2-13), which lost its sixth
straight game, got 16 points from forward Jill McGowan but
no other Tiger player scored more than seven
points.
Delaware led 40-23 at halftime and upped
to the lead to 20 points early in the second half before the
Tigers slowly moved back into the game. Towson cut the lead
to eight points at 57-49 with 6:21 left to play, but the
Hens responded with a 10-0 run to regain control.
The Hens held a 50-36 margin on the
boards and took advantage of 19 Towson turnovers. Towson
shot just 34 percent from the field (19 of 55) and were just
5 of 21 from the three-point line. McGowan tied a school
record with her 14 three-point attempts, connecting on
four.
