NEWARK, DE -- The University of
Delaware clinched the America East regular season title and
earned the top seed in the upcoming league tournament with a
decisive 80-57 women's basketball victory over Northeastern
Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Megan Dellegrotti led the Blue
Hens (20-3, 14-0) with 17 points while forward Lindsay
Davis added 13 points, hit all three three-pointers,
pulled seven rebounds, and dished out a team-high four
assists in her first start of the season to lead the way.
Delaware has now won 15 straight games, 17 straight games at
home, and 22 straight America East regular season
games.
Delaware, which reached 20 wins for the
second straight season, clinches its first ever America East
title as the Hens lead second place Drexel by five games
with four league games left to play. Delaware swept the
season series with Drexel. The regular season title is the
first for the Blue Hens since winning the East Coast
Conference title back in 1990-91, the year before Delaware
joined America East.
Northeastern, which had a two-game win
streak snapped, fell to 11-11, 7-6 despite 17 points off the
bench from Kiarsha Curtis and 14 points and nine rebounds
from Lani Lawrence.
The Huskies scored the first basket of
the game, but the Hens quickly tied the game and never
trailed again. The Hens, thanks to just two first half
turnovers, led 36-21 at halftime and were never seriously
threatened in the second stanza. Delaware outscored
Northeastern 12-3 to start the second half and led by as
much as 32 points at 67-35 with 8:15 left to play.
Northeastern followed with a 16-0 spurt over a five-minute
span, but could never get closer than 16 points at 67-51
with 3:49 left to play.
Davis, starting in place of injured
starting forward Danielle Leyfert (knee), hit on all
four shots from the field, including all three
three-pointers, to go with seven rebounds, four assists, two
blocks, and two steals in 27 minutes.
Overall the Hens hit on 7 of 11 shots
from beyond the three-point arc. Allison Trapp added
11 points off the bench for Delaware and freshman Tracey
Howell collected a team-high nine rebounds in just 17
minutes of action. Christina Rible had a streak of
seven straight double-doubles snapped but added nine points
and seven rebounds.
