Blue Hens Hang Tough Early, Finally Fall to Cap Dream Season

Cindy Johnson capped her stellar career with 20 points
RALEIGH, NC -- The record-setting University of Delaware women's basketball squad stayed close for a half in its first venture into the NCAA Tournament before host North Carolina State used its quickness and timely outside shooting to pull away for a 76-57 victory in the first round of the NCAA East Regional Tournament Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum.

No. 19 ranked North Carolina State, making its 16th NCAA Tournament appearance, advances to the second round where the No. 4 seed Wolfpack will face No. 5 seed Villanova, which downed No. 12 Drake 66-58 in the other first round game.

No. 13 seed Delaware, which captured its first America East title last week and was making its initial appearance in the NCAA Tournament, had a four-game win streak snapped and finished the best season in school history with a mark of 26-5. Along the way the Hens set numerous records, including marks for wins in a season (26), consecutive wins (17), and consecutive road wins (9).

Senior guard Cindy Johnson (August Martin/Far Rockaway, NY) capped an outstanding career with a team-high 20 points to lead the Blue Hens. Delaware's all-time leading scorer with 1,675 points, she also set a UD career mark for field goals (647) and a single season mark for points scored (520) during the game. Senior forward Danielle Leyfert (Oakton/Vienna, VA) added 12 points for the Hens, finishing with 1,447 points to rank fifth all-time at UD.

Amy Simpson came off the bench to lead North Carolina State with 17 points, including four three-pointers, and Tynesha Lewis, Ivy Gardner, and Christen Greene each added 10 points.

"It was a tough game for us, but I'm so proud of our basketball team and the strides that we have made this season," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "N.C. State is a great team. We tried to make them shoot the outside jumper and it worked for about 15 minutes until Simpson hit some big three-pointers for them. I thought we gave a great effort tonight and although we didn't execute at times, I am very proud of what this team accomplished."

Delaware played the Wolfpack straight up for most of the first half, taking a 11-7 lead six minutes into the game. The Hens led 20-18 before North Carolina State tied the score at 20-20 with 8:40 left to play. That would be the last time the Blue Hens held a share of the lead as the Wolfpack embarked on a 23-6 run over the two halves to take control.

Simpson nailed three three-pointers in the final 2:52 of the first half to give North Carolina State a 36-27 halftime lead and the Wolfpack opened the second half on a 7-0 run to put the game away. Delaware pulled to within 14 points at 61-47 with 8:28 left, but could never get closer. North Carolina State never led by more than 22 points.

North Carolina State shot 54 percent from the field (31 of 57) and outrebounded the Blue Hens 38-28. Delaware committed only 10 turnovers, but was hurt by 36.4 percent field goal shooting (20 of 55).
