Johnson, Leyfert Star on Senior Night as Blue Hens Tie Win Record

Cindy Johnson had 20 points and six assists in her final home appearance

NEWARK, DE -- Senior guard Cindy Johnson scored 20 points and dished out six assists in her final regular season appearance at the Bob Carpenter Center to lead the University of Delaware to a 79-62 America East women's basketball victory over Hofstra in the final regular season game for both teams Thursday night.

Johnson, Delaware's all-time leading scorer, netted 10 points in each half as the America East regular season champion Blue Hens (23-4, 17-1) jumped out to a big lead early and cruised to the win. Hofstra (8-18, 5-13), which lost its sixth straight game, got a career-high 24 points and 14 rebounds from forward Kimberley Coke.

Delaware, which will be the No. 1 seed in next week's America East Tournament at the University of Vermont, tied a school record for wins in a season, matching the 1988-89 squad that went 23-6 on its way to the East Coast Conference title. The Hens also finished a perfect season at home (11-0) and extended their home winning streak to a school record 19 games.

Junior guard Megan Dellegrotti added 13 points, including three three-pointers, while senior Danielle Leyfert added 12 points and six assists in her final BCC appearance. Christina Rible notched a team-high eight rebounds. The Hens shot 50 percent from the field, connecting on 31 of 62 shots, including 6 of 11 from the three-point line.

The Pride, which will be the No. 9 seed in the upcoming America East tournament, was hurt by 27 turnovers, including 15 in the first half. Hofstra did hold a 37-25 advantage on the boards as Stacey Claxton added 13 points and seven rebounds and Jen Brickey connected for 15 points.

Delaware never trailed the entire game, jumping out to an 8-2 lead as Dellegrotti nailed two three-pointers in the first 1:24 of play. Hofstra cut the lead to 16-10 with 14:19 left in the opening half, but the Hens countered with a 12-0 run to go up 28-10 and never looked back. Delaware led by at least 16 points the entire second half.
