Seven score in
double-figures as Hens' roll
|

Tracey
Howell scored a career-high 10
points

HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The University of
Delaware set a school-record for balance with seven players
scoring in double-figures as it extended its winning streak
to 12 straight with an 83-73 win over Hofstra in America
East women's basketball action at Hofstra Arena.
The Blue Hens, who moved to 17-3 for only
the third time in school history and 11-0 in America East
play, got double-figure scoring from Danielle Leyfert
(14 points), Christina Rible (13), Cindy
Johnson (12), Allison Trapp (12), Megan
Dellegrotti (10), Christine Cole (10) and
Tracey Howell (career-high 10). Rible also added a
game-high 13 rebounds for her 11th double-double this season
and fifth consecutive.
"Having seven players in double figures
is a great statement for our team," said Delaware coach Tina
Martin, who picked up her first-ever win in Hempstead. "Our
free throw shooting was outstanding, especially in the
second half (24 for 27 overall, 16 for 17 in the second
half). I am very happy to get another road win in America
East play."
Behind the three-point shooting of Jen
Brickey, Hofstra lit up the Delaware defense in the first
half. The Pride (7-12, 4-7) jumped out to a 43-38 halftime
lead as Brickey hit 5 for 10 from three-point range. The 43
points were the most Delaware has allowed in a first half
this season and the most since December 9, 1999 when they
gave up 44 to Vermont.
Hofstra extended that lead to 47-38 to
start the second half before Delaware rallied with a 22-7
run. Megan Dellegrotti got the run started with a
three-pointer with 18:25 left and when it was all said and
done six minutes later, the Blue Hens held a 60-52
lead.
Delaware made another run to put the game
away. Leading 64-60, the Blue Hens went on a 15-4 spurt to
take a 79-64 lead with 1:55 left and coasted the rest of the
way.
Brickey was held to just 1 for 2 from
behind the arc in the second half and finished with a
game-high 24 points.
Delaware also picked up its eight
straight road win, its longest road winning streak since
1988-89. Delaware's 17-3 start equals that of the 1980-81
and 1983-84 teams. The 12-game winning streak is tied for
the second longest in the nation behind top-ranked Notre
Dame and is four shy of the UD record of 16
straight.
Delaware returns home to host Drexel
Sunday at 4 p.m., where a UD women's basketball single-game
record crowd is expected to greet the Blue Hens. The game
will also be televised on the America East Television
Network (CN-8 and Home Team Sports locally).
