Christine
Cole Recorded Her First Career Double-Double in the
Win
|
NEWARK, DE -- Cindy Johnson scored
a game-high 22 points to lead five Delaware players in
double-figures as the Blue Hens won their 13th straight
game, 81-66, over Drexel in women's basketball action at the
Bob Carpenter Center Sunday afternoon.
In front of a school record crowd for a
single women's basketball game of 2,391, the Blue Hens
raised their mark to 18-3 overall and a perfect 12-0 in
America East play. They won their 20th straight America East
regular seaon game and their 15th straight game at home. The
13-game winning streak is the second longest in the nation
behind top-ranked Notre Dame, which has won 21
straight.
Johnson, a senior from Far Rockaway, NY,
became just the third woman in school-history to top the
1,500 career-point mark. She achieved the milestone on a
jumper at the 11:06 mark of the first half and now has 1,519
points for her career. She is the 19th player in America
East history to top the mark and is currently tied for No.
16 on the conference's career scoring list with former
Drexel star Jen MacNeill. Johnson is also third on the UD
scoring list.
Delaware, which had a school-record seven
players in double figures in Friday night's win over
Hofstra, took the lead for good three minutes into the game.
After Drexel (12-8, 8-4) jumped out to a 5-2 lead, the Blue
Hens scored the next nine points and never trailed after
that.
The Lady Dragons got to within three,
44-41, with 15:32 remaining on a Heather McGinty jumper.
However, Delaware went on a 12-4 run after that, with six of
the points coming on a pair of three-pointers by Megan
Dellegrotti. The junior from Berwick, PA now has 93
career three-pointers, five shy of the school mark held by
Linda Cyborski.
The five players scoring in
double-figures marks the seventh straight game that the Blue
Hens have had four or more players in double-digits. Along
with Johnson's 22, Delaware got 14 points from Dellegrotti,
14 by Allison Trapp, 10 by Christine Cole, and
14 by Christina Rible, who also had 15 rebounds in
recording her sixth straight double-double and 12th of the
season.
The win, coupled with Vermont's loss at
home to Maine, gives Delaware a four-game lead with six
conference games remaining. Drexel and Vermont are tied for
second at 8-4.
Delaware will host Boston University
Thursday at 7 p.m.
