January 6, 2001 Blue Hens Use 16-0 Run to Pull Away Late
PHILADELPHIA -- A season-high 17 points from Danielle Leyfert and a 16-0 run late in the second half propelled the Blue Hens to an 85-73 win over Drexel Saturday afternoon at the Daskalakis Center in Philadelphia. Cindy Johnson scored 19 of her game-high 25 points in the first half as the Hens (11-3, 5-0 America East) jumped out to a 33-17 lead with just under six minutes left in the first half, but Drexel (7-4, 3-1) trimmed the lead to seven at the half and led 71-68 with 4:39 remaining. But Delaware responded with a 16-0 run, capped off by a Christine Cole lay-up with 25 seconds left, to secure its 13th straight regular season conference victory, just one shy of the school record set in 1983-85. Johnson added seven steals and a game-high 12 rebounds, and Christina Rible finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the season and fifth in five conference games. Leyfert carried the Hens early in the second half, scoring 10 of Delaware's first 17 second half points to keep the Hens in front. After falling behind 9-6, Delaware went on a 27-8 run to build a 16-point lead, but Drexel finally retook the lead with 9:23 to go on a basket by Katrina Martin, who finished with 14 points. The lead changed hands several times over the next five minutes before the Delaware spurt. Michelle Maslowski led the Dragons with 19 points on 9 of 13 shooting and nine rebounds, but fouled out with 3:41 left and Drexel down just 74-71. The Blue Hens, who have now won six straight and nine of 10, next travel to Boston to face Northeastern Friday night at 7 p.m.
