January 3, 2001 Cold-Shooting Hens Dominate Boards, Down DelState
NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women's basketball team overcame a cold-shooting night but dominated on the boards for a 60-46 non-league victory over intrastate rival Delaware State Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. Senior guard Cindy Johnson led four scorers in double figures with 14 points and senior forward Danielle Leyfert and junior guard Megan Dellegrotti each chipped in with 12 as the Blue Hens (10-3) won their fifth straight game and extended their home winning streak to 12 games over two seasons. Each of the 12 straight home wins have been by 10 or more points. Delaware State (3-8), which lost its fifth straight game and second in two nights, got 10 points off the bench from Keysha Tiller while Ashley Etheridge scored nine points, pulled six rebounds, and dished out four assists. Delaware has now defeated Delaware State in all eight meetings in the series. The Blue Hens shot just 30.3 percent from the field, hitting on 20 of 66 shots, but held a 55-34 rebounding advantage as junior forward Christina Rible pulled down 15 rebounds and Leyfert, Christine Cole, and Tracey Howell each collected nine. The Hens, who also hit just 17 of 26 shots from the foul line, had 24 offensive rebounds. Delaware State did not fare much better from the field, hitting on 15 of 49 shots (.306) while committing 18 turnovers. The Hornets misfired on their first 11 field goal attempts of the game and did not score a field goal until Tiller connected at the 9:24 mark to cut the Delaware lead to 12-6. Delaware State battled back to cut the Delaware halftime lead to 25-23 and pulled to within seven points at 38-31 with 11:19 left in the game before the Blue Hens moved on with a 13-1 run to go up 51-32 with 5:19 left to play. Allison Trapp (11 points) scored five points in the run while Leyfert and Dellegrotti each scored four to lead the way.
