Rible Scores 20, Keys 13-0 2nd Half Run as Blue Hens Advance

Christina Rible

BURLINGTON, VT -- Junior forward Christina Rible scored seven of her team-high 20 points in a key 13-0 run midway through the second half as top seed University of Delaware downed upset-minded Boston University 67-49 in an America East women's basketball quarterfinal tournament game Thursday afternoon at the University of Vermont's Patrick Gymnasium.

The Blue Hens, the tournament's No. 1 seed with a 17-1 regular season record, improved to 24-4 to set a school record for victories, surpassing the 23-6 mark by the 1988-89 squad that won the East Coast Conference title.

Delaware, which has never won a league title since joining America East in 1992-93 and has never advanced to the NCAA Tournament, moves on to the America East semifinals for the second straight year where the Hens will take on No. 5 Hartford (15-13) Friday at 6 p.m. The Hawks advanced with a 70-55 upset over No. 4 Maine earlier Thursday as Janeka Lopp had 15 points to lead a balanced effort.

Rible (Red Bank Regional/Little Silver, NJ) connected for her 15th double-double of the season as she hit on 9 of 13 shots from the field for 20 points and pulled a team-high 10 rebounds. Teammate and fellow first team All-America East selection Cindy Johnson added 15 points and Danielle Leyfert chipped in with 14 points to pace the Blue Hens.

No. 8 seed Boston University (10-19) ended its season despite 18 points from freshman Katie Terhune, 12 points from Dia Dufault, and 10 from Alison Dixon. The Terriers were looking to become the first-ever team to knock off the top seed in the quarterfinal round in America East history.

Boston University, which played Delaware close before losing both meetings in the regular season, jumped out to a 27-26 halftime lead over the Blue Hens and were still in front with 14:29 left with a 37-34 lead.

But Rible took over for the Hens, scoring seven of her team's 13 points in a 13-0 run to put Delaware up 47-37 with 8:18 left to play. The Terriers never got the lead under nine points the rest of the way as the Hens pulled away for the victory. The Hens outscored Boston University 41-22 in the second half as they shot 59.3 percent from the field (16 of 27).

The Hens committed just nine turnovers on the afternoon compared to Boston University's 20 and the 49 points allowed was the second lowest this season for Delaware.
