NEWARK, DE -- The University of
Delaware women's basketball squad thrived at the foul line
for the second straight game and junior forward Christina
Rible posted her second straight double-double with team
highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Blue Hens knocked
off defending league champion Vermont 67-55 in an early
season battle of America East pre-season favorites Sunday at
the Bob Carpenter Center.
Rible hit 7 of 11 shots from the field
and connected on 9 of 10 shots from the line for 23 points
to lead four Blue Hen starters in double figures. The Blue
Hens (5-2, 2-0), the pre-season favorite to win the
conference title, hit just 15 field goals for the game but
converted 35 of 42 free throws to clinch the win. Delaware
connected on 31 of 39 shots from the line in Friday night's
70-50 win over Hartford.
America East power Vermont (3-4, 0-1),
which lost at Delaware for the fourth straight season, was
hurt by 31 fouls and 22 turnovers for the game and went to
the line just 15 times, converting 12. Dawn Cressman was the
team's lone double figure scorer with 15 points and a
team-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Morgan Hall, the
2000 America East Rookie of the Year, scored just two points
before fouling out in the final minute.
Delaware, which won for the 10th straight
time at home since last season, got 17 points from guard
Cindy Johnson while forward Danielle Leyfert
and guard Megan Dellegrotti each chipped in with 10.
The Hens won despite shooting just 29.4 percent from the
field (15 of 51).
The game looked like a blowout early as
the Hens jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first five minutes
of the game. But the Catamounts fought back and cut the lead
to 18-15 with 7:16 left in the half. But another Delaware
run gave the Blue Hens a 32-19 lead at halftime.
Vermont could never get closer than seven
points at 44-37 with eight minutes left in the game when UD
followed with a six-point run to go up 50-37.
