DURHAM, NH -- Senior Cindy Johnson
scored a game-high 17 points and Christina Rible
added 15 points and 13 rebounds as University of Delaware
defeated New Hampshire, 71-55, in America East women's
basketball action at Whittemore Center Friday
night.
The win moved Delaware to 3-0 in America
East play for the first time since joining the league in
1991-92. The last time Delaware was 3-0 in conference play
was 1990-91 as a member of the East Coast
Conference.
"It was a good road victory," said
Delaware coach Tina Martin. "When we had to, we got
defensive stops and connected on big shots in the last seven
minutes."
New Hampshire (2-5, 0-1 America East)
jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game before the Blue
Hens (6-3 overall) went on a 28-8 run to take control of the
game. The Wildcats pulled within four at 49-45. However,
Delaware scored 12 of the next 15 points, capped by a
Carrie Timmins three-pointer, which was her only
field goal of the night, with 3:54 to play to put the game
out of reach.
The Blue Hens continued their free throw
proficiency. Delaware shot 21 for 29 from the free throw
line and has now made 208 of 292 through the first nine
games this season. Beginning play Thursday, Boston
University was the only America East team that had gone to
the line more than 200 times.
Johnson, a native of Far Rockaway, NY,
played all 40 minutes in the contest and added seven
rebounds. She now has 1,290 career points, fifth-best in
school history and 270 points behind all-time leader Colleen
McNamara.
Senior Danielle Leyfert also added
15 points, shooting 7 for 11 at the free throw line for
Delaware.
Delaware continues on its weekend road
trip with a game against Maine at Alfond Arena Sunday
afternoon. Game time is 12 noon.
