LORETTO, PA -- Senior guard
Cindy Johnson exploded for 27 of her career-high 34
points in the second half and sophomore guard Allison
Trapp scored 26 points in her first career start as the
University of Delaware women's basketball overcame a
seven-point halftime deficit to post an 87-83 non-league win
over St. Francis Wednesday night at DeGol Arena.
Johnson (August Martin/Far Rockaway, NY),
who connected on 11 of 22 shots from the field and 12 of 14
from the line, helped the Blue Hens win their fourth
straight game and improve to 9-3 heading into a 13-day
break. Johnson surpassed her previous career-high of 31
points vs. George Washington in the season opener Nov. 10.
St. Francis, the five-time defending Northeast Conference
champion, fell to 1-7 despite Tonjee Ward who came off the
bench to score a career-high 26 points, including hitting on
seven of nine three-point attempts.
The Blue Hens, playing without the
services of starting forward Danielle Leyfert and key
backup Lindsay Davis due to injuries, got a big
effort from Trapp, who scored 17 of her 26 points in the
opening stanza. The East Carolina University transfer from
Philadelphia (West Catholic HS) got her first career start
and responded by hitting on 11 of 22 shots from the field
and pulling six rebounds in 38 minutes. Christina
Rible scored eight points and pulled a team-high 12
rebounds for the Hens, who committed just 11
turnovers.
"We knew this was going to be a tough
one," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "We're
just happy to escape from here with a win in hand. CJ
(Johnson) really stepped up in the second half when we
needed her to. She made some great plays in the open court
for us."
Jordin Schaffner and Carlin Chesick each
added 14 points for the Red Flash while Deanna Jubeck came
off the bench to dish out 12 assists. St. Francis connected
on 13 of 20 three-pointers for the game and shot 58.2
percent overall (32 of 55) from the field for the game but
were hurt by 26 turnovers.
The Hens, who won for the first time this
season when trailing at the half, jumped out to a 19-8 lead
in the first eight minutes but couldn't hold on. The Red
Flash rallied and took a 40-33 lead into
intermission.
Delaware, which hit on 21 of 40 shots
from the field in the second stanza, trailed by as much as
11 points at 54-43 with 14:13 before rallying. An 8-0 Blue
Hen run finally tied the game at 55-55 with 10:04
left.
After two lead changes, St. Francis went
up for the last time at 68-67 with 5:40 left but Delaware
countered with a Johnson layup, a basket and free throw from
Trapp, and a short jumper by Christine Cole to go up
74-68 with 4:19 left. Schaffner nailed a three-pointer with
nine seconds left to cut the lead to 86-83, but Johnson hit
a free throw three seconds later to seal the win.
The Hens return to action Jan. 3 when
they host intra-state rival Delaware State at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
