PRINCETON, NJ - Senior guard Cindy Johnson
returned to action to pour in a game-high 17 points and
forward Christina Rible scored 15 points and pulled
seven rebounds to lead the University of Delaware women's
basketball team to a 66-47 non-league win over Princeton
Wednesday night at Jadwin Gym.
The Blue Hens (3-2), coming off a one-point loss to
Maryland in the finals of the Terrapin Classic Sunday, broke
away from a nine-point halftime lead by outscoring the
Tigers 15-4 to start the second half. Delaware downed
Princeton for the fifth straight time.
Lindsay Davis came off the bench to add 11 points
for the Blue Hens, who held Princeton (0-4) to just 12 of 41
shooting from the field (.293) for the game, including a 4
for 20 mark from the three-point line. Princeton also
committed 26 turnovers and had three players foul out.
Center Maureen Lane led Princeton with 15 points while
Lauren Rigney had 11 points, eight rebounds, and two
assists.
"Obviously we will take the win," said Delaware head
coach Tina Martin. "This was definitely a letdown
(from Sunday). Our seniors need to step up and make sure a
game like this doesn't happen again. We need to come out
strong to start conference play this week."
Delaware, the pre-season favorite to capture the America
East crown, will open league play this weekend by hosting
Hartford Friday night and defending champion Vermont Sunday
afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Johnson, who missed her first career game vs. Maryland
with an ankle injury, came back strong as she hit 6 of 9
shots from the field and 5 of 6 from the line for 17 points.
She moved into sixth place on the all-time UD scoring list
past Shanda Piggott during the game.
The Hens used a 7-0 run to go up 30-15 late in the first
half but Princeton rallied and cut the halftime deficit to
30-21. But Delaware came out strong in the second half as
Johnson scored six points in a 15-4 run to start the stanza,
putting the Hens up 45-25 with 14 minutes left to play.
