LONG BRANCH, NJ -- Senior Cindy
Johnson scored a game-high 25 points and the Delaware
defense forced 30 turnovers as the Blue Hens evened their
record at 1-1 on the season with a 76-54 win at Monmouth
Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hens, who lost their opener at
George Washington in the Pre-season WNIT, bounced back to
handle the Hawks easily. After leading by seven at the
intermission, 33-26, Delaware used a 19-5 run to open up the
second half and take a 21-point lead, 52-31. Monmouth closed
to within 13 with an 8-0 run. However, Delaware's 60-47 lead
at that point would never get any smaller.
"We played well enough to win," said
Delaware coach Tina Martin. "We're happy to get a
win, but we have to get better. Our man-to-man defense
caused them problems today and that was the
difference."
Johnson, who set a UD opening game record
with 31 points in the loss to George Washington, hit 9 of 17
from the field and 7 of 9 at the foul line. She moved into
No. 7 on the all-time UD scoring list with 1,209 career
points. The Far Rockaway, NY native moved ahead of Lisa Cano
and became the highest scoring guard in Blue Hen women's
basketball history.
Christina Rible added a
double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while
Danielle Leyfert had 13 points and six steals and
Megan Dellegrotti chipped in with 12 points and four
assists.
Meanwhile, the Blue Hens' defense forced
30 Hawk turnovers and 9 of 31 shooting from the field in the
second half. Amanda Rosato, Monmouth's top returning scorer,
had just five points in the first half and finished the day
with 16 points of 5 of 13 shooting.
The Blue Hens spoiled the debut of Jackie
DeVane in her first game as head coach at Monmouth after
previously coaching at Delaware State.
Delaware returns to action at the
Terrapin Classic next weekend in College Park, MD. The Blue
Hens face Long Beach State Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
Maryland hosts Wagner in the first game of the tournament at
2 p.m.
