COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Christina Rible hit two free throws with 59 seconds left for the game's final points and Long Beach State missed a foul-line jumper at the buzzer to preserve the University of Delaware's 66-65 women's basketball victory over Long Beach State Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Terrapin Classic at the University of Maryland's Cole Field House. Delaware (2-1), which got 16 points off the bench from junior forward Lindsay Davis (River Dell/River Edge, NJ), will take on host Maryland in the championship game Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. The host Terrapins downed Wagner 89-44 in their first round game Saturday. "This is such a great win for our program," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose team posted one of its most significant wins in her five-year tenure. "Our players really stepped up today and we are looking forward to meeting Maryland in the championship game." Danielle Leyfert (Oakton/Vienna, VA) added 13 points while Christina Cole (South Lakes/Reston, VA) had eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds and Rible chipped in with eight points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Hens. Leading scorer Cindy Johnson (August Martin/Jamaica, NY), who entered the game averaging 28 points per game, was held to just nine points. Long Beach State (0-2), which advanced to the third round of the Women's NIT a year ago and was ranked No. 56 in this year's pre-season power rankings, got 20 points from guard Reta Sula and 19 points and 11 rebounds from center Jackie Moore. The Blue Hens jumped out to a 32-25 halftime lead and built that to 39-29 just two minutes into the stanza as Davis scored the first seven points of the half, including a three-pointer to cap the run. The Hens went up by as much as 12 points at 48-36 with 13:40 left and still led by 10 points at 63-53 with 5:50 left before Long Beach mounted a comeback. Long Beach State took its first lead since midway through the first half at the 1:12 mark when Charel Bailey hit two free throws for a 65-64 lead. Just 13 seconds later Rible (Red Bank Regional/Little Silver, NJ) rebounded a Johnson missed jumper and was fouled. The junior nailed both free throws to put the Hens up 66-65. Delaware had a chance to build on the lead but Leyfert missed the front end of a one and one with 24 seconds left. Long Beach State grabbed the rebound and held out for the last shot but Ekuah Ramsey missed a foul line jumper just before the buzzer to clinch the win for Delaware.
