NEWARK, DE -- Junior forward
Christina Rible (Red Bank/Little Silver, NJ) led the way
inside with 16 points and 14 rebounds and junior guard
Megan Dellegrotti (Berwick, PA HS) did the job from
the outside with 16 points and three assists as the
University of Delaware women's basketball team downed
Hartford 70-50 in the America East conference opener for
both teams Friday night at the Bob Carpenter
Center.
The Blue Hens (4-2, 1-0), the pre-season
favorites to capture the league title, opened the game on an
18-2 run and never looked back in posting their ninth
straight home victory since last season. Delaware has now
won six straight home openers. Hartford (4-1, 0-1) fell from
the unbeaten ranks despite game highs of 17 points and 11
rebounds from forward Janeka Lopp and 12 points from center
Kenitra Johnson.
Delaware senior guard Cindy
Johnson, the Hens' leading scorer at 20 points per game,
managed nine points on the night while senior forward
Danielle Leyfert added eight points and seven rebounds. The
Blue Hens took advantage of 30 Hartford fouls and connected
on 31 of 39 free throws for the game, including 22 of 26 in
the second half.
The Hens came out storming, going up 18-2
in the first eight minutes as Dellegrotti connected on two
three-pointers. Delaware led 25-6 with eight minutes left in
the first half before Hartford recovered and cut the lead to
34-21 at the half. But the Hawks could never chip away at
the UD lead and never got closer than 13 points in the final
14 minutes of play.
The Hens face a showdown Sunday when they
host defending America East champion Vermont at 1 p.m. at
the Bob Carpenter Center.
