WASHINGTON -- Cindy Johnson
set a UD opening night record with 31
points, but it was not enough as Delaware
fell to George Washington,
78-56, at the Smith Center in the first
round of the Pre-season Women's
National Invitation
Tournament.
Johnson, a senior from Far Rockaway, NY,
became the fifth Delaware
player to score 30 or more points in a
game. However, UD was a victim of
27 turnovers and 28.8% shooting from the
field.
After Delaware jumped out to score the
first six points of the game, the
Colonials responded by scoring 23 of the
next 28 points and never looked
back.
"I think we have to keep this game in
perspective," said Delaware coach
Tina Martin. "We did not make good
decisions and that shows with 27
turnovers. We rushed a lot of shots, and
we took some bad shots.
"It is an early date to play. We just
have to take this and get better.
Playing in the WNIT is a great experience
and there's no doubt in my
mind that GW will be in the Top
25.
"As big as they are, we had a 42-40
advantage on the boards. We made bad
decisions, turned the ball over, and
didn't shoot well."
George Washington had five players score
in double figures, led by
Kristeena Alexander and Corrin Reid with
15 points apiece.
Delaware held a 42-40 rebound advantage,
led by Christina Rible's
career-high 17 rebounds. Johnson's 31
points were also a career-high.
