February 1, 1999
NEWARK, DE -- Chris Seifert (Myerstown,
Pa/Eastern Lebanon Valley) had a career-high 23 points and
season-high nine rebounds to lead the University of Delaware
women's basketball team (13-7, 7-5) to a 66-63 victory over
Northeastern (12-6, 6-4) Monday at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Hens avenged a 90-67 loss earlier in the season at
Cabot Gym to the Huskies and moved to six games over .500
for the first time since the 1989-90 season.
Cindy Johnson (Far Rockaway, N.Y./August Martin)
had 15 points for the Hens while Renee Baker
(Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) also scored in double
figures with 11 points. Danielle Leyfert (Vienna,
Va./Oakton) was held to only six points, but had six
rebounds and five assists for Delaware. Christina
Rible (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) tied a
team-high with nine rebounds.
Northeastern was led by Tesha Tinsley who had 30 points
and 15 rebounds. Tinsley has now scored 71 points and
grabbed 24 rebounds this year against the Hens. Betsy
Palecek also chipped in with 17 points and eight rebounds
for the Huskies, while Lani Lawrence had 10 points and seven
boards.
Delaware trailed at halftime for the fourth straight game
28-27 after a first half that saw them shoot 8-29 from the
field. The second half was back and forth. Delaware took a
54-47 lead with 9:02 left, however Northeastern went on a
10-2 run to take a 57-56 lead with 5:15 left. Delaware was
down 59-58 with 4:27 left, but
Leyfert had two straight buckets and assisted on Rible
layup to put Delaware up for good at 64-60. Northeastern
had a chance to tie the game when Baker missed two free
throws with 66-63 lead and 13 seconds left, but a Tinsley
three pointer at the buzzer missed to perserve the Delaware
victory. The Hens shot .593 percent from the field in the
second half.
Delaware will be in action on Saturday Feb. 6 against
Towson at the Bob Carpenter Center at 1 p.m.
