ORONO, ME -- Center Jamie Cassidy had game highs
of 23 points and 12 rebounds and host University of Maine
held Delaware to just one field goal in the first nine
minutes of the game as the Blue Hens dropped an 81-51
America East women's basketball game Friday night at Alfond
Arena.
Cassidy, a 6-4 center, hit on 9 of 14 shots from the
field and also blocked two shots as league-leading Maine
(11-4, 7-0) won for the sixth straight game and for the 10th
time in the last 11 outings. Delaware (10-6, 4-4), playing
for the second straight game without leading scorer, forward
Danielle Leyfert (ankle), had a four-game winning
streak snapped.
Forward Kelly Bowman added 16 points and guard Kristen
McCormick added 13 points for Maine, which shot 50 percent
from the field for the game (30-60) and had nine blocked
shots.
Sophomore guard Cindy Johnson led the Blue Hen
effort with 13 points and six rebounds while Renee
Baker added 10 points and Karen Mulligan pulled a
team-high nine rebounds.
Maine jumped out to a 20-4 lead in the first six minutes
of the game and never looked back, holding the Hens to just
one field goal in the first nine minutes. The Hens fell
behind 43-26 at halftime as they hit just 7 of 32 shots
(.219) from the field. For the game, the Hens hit on just 23
percent of their shots (15 of 64).
Delaware returns to action Sunday when they travel to New
Hampshire for a 1 p.m. start.
