Hofstra Downs Delaware in Women's Regular Season

HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Nora Anderson scored 24 points
and led a late run and Noreen Duffy sank six three-pointers
for 23 points as host Hofstra defeated the University of
Delaware 89-74 in an America East women's basketball game
Thursday night at the Physical Fitness Center.
The game was the final regular season game for both
teams. The Hens (16-10, 10-8 America East) will be the No. 5
seed in next week's America East Tournament and take on host
and No. 4 seed Vermont in the quarterfinals. Hofstra
improved to 8-18, 6-12 and defeated the Hens for just the
fourth time in 31 all-time meetings.
Delaware sophomore forward Danielle Leyfert led
the Hens with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and
four steals while sophomore center Tracy Whitling
came off the bench to add 10 points and eight rebounds and
freshman Christina Rible collected a career- high 14
points. Sophomore guard Cindy Johnson, Delaware's
second leading scorer, was held to just six points, snapping
a streak of 17 straight games in double figures.
Hofstra led by as much as 16 points in the first half
before the Hens settled down. Delaware took a 58-56 lead
with 11:20 left to play, led 65-62 with 8:06 remaining, and
tied the score at 67-67 with 5:22 left. But Anderson, who
hit on 13 of 14 free throws for the game, followed with a
three-pointer and two free throws in the next minute and hit
four more from the line in the final 1:06 to put the game
away.
