Dec. 20, 1998 at Buffalo, NY

Delaware 79, Canisius 67

BUFFALO, NY - Sophomore forward Danielle Leyfert scored 26 points, pulled 11 rebounds, and dished out five assists and freshman forward Christina Rible came off the bench to set career highs with 14 points and 14 rebounds as the University of Delaware women's basketball team won its third straight game with a 79-67 win over Canisius Sunday at Koessler Gym.

The Blue Hens (6-3), playing for the last time before resuming America East action Jan. 3 at Towson, continued a remarkable turnaround, matching last year's entire win total for the season when the Hens went 6-21.

Leyfert (Oakton/Vienna, VA) who posted her fourth 20-point effort of the season, and Rible (Red Bank/Little Silver, NJ), led a Blue Hen effort that included a commanding 60-45 advantage on the boards. The 60 rebounds was the most by a UD team since pulling 63 vs Rider Jan. 27, 1990.

The Blue Hens also got a big effort off the bench from junior Karen Mulligan. Mulligan, a transfer from St. John's, returned to action after missing the last seven games with a foot injury and scored 11 points, including three three-pointers. Canisius (1-6), which committed 23 turnovers, got 14 points and nine rebounds from forward Maggie Guidry and 10 points from forward Jill Wilson.

Delaware used an early 15-2 run to go up 37-26 at halftime. But the Griffins rallied back, opening the second half on a 17-6 run to tie the game. Delaware then mounted a 12-2 run to put the game away.

Delaware played without freshman starting point guard Megan Dellegrotti who was nursing a foot injury.
