NEWARK, DE -- Karen Mulligan (Ronkonkama,
N.Y./ Connetquot) had a career-high 21 points and set the UD
record for most consecutive field goals with 11 to help lead
Delaware to a 76-67 victory over defending America East
regular season champion Vermont.
Mulligan went 5-5 against Boston University on Monday and
started tonight's game 6-6 to set the previous record of
eight held by Marian Moorer who set the record Feb. 2-5,
1987.
Delaware, who has now started out the season 5-0 at home
and won six straight games at the Bob Carpenter Center, was
knotted at 18 apiece with Vermont until they went 23-6 run
to open up the game. Mulligan had 15 of the 23 points
during the course of the run. Delaware led 43-28 going into
halftime. Vermont cut the lead down to six twice in the
second half, including 69-63 with 3:32 left in the second
half before the hens hit seven of their last 10 free throws
to pull away.
Freshman Megan Dellegrotti (Berwick, Pa./ Berwick)
continued her strong return from her foot injury with 12
points while Cindy Johnson (Far Rockaway, N.Y./
August Martin) also chipped in with 12. Freshman
Christina Rible (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank
Regional) led Delaware in rebounds for the second game in a
row with six boards.
Vermont was led by last year's America East Player of
the Year Karalyn Church who had 20 points, but was held to
only three rebounds on the game. Libby Smith also
contributed for the Catamounts with 10 points, nine rebounds
and six assists.
Delaware will be in action next when they take on
Hartford at 1 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center on Saturday
January 16.
