Delaware 74, Navy 67
The University of Delaware women's basketball team (4-3)
broke a three-game losing streak by defeating Navy 74-67 at
the Bob Carpenter Center Monday night.
The win moved the Blue Hens record to 3-0 at home this
year, and allowed Delaware to avenge a 77-55 defeat at the
hands of Navy last season. Navy jumped out to a 12-6 lead in
the first six minutes of the game, but Delaware went on an
8-2 run to tie the game at 14. The first half was a back and
forth affair which saw Navy lead by no more than five. The
Midshipmen went into halftime with a 35-30 lead led by Erica
Hayes who scored 14 points in the first half.
Delaware started the second half on a 7-0 run to take a
37-35 lead. The game saw four lead changes in the second
half, but the Blue Hens held Navy to 30 percent shooting in
the second half and shot 53 percent to propel themselves to
the victory.
Delaware was led by Danielle Leyfert (Vienna,
Va/Oakton) who scored 25 points and Cindy Johnson
(Far Rockaway, N.Y./August Martin) who scored a career- high
24 points and had eight rebounds. Leyfert scored 18 points
in the second half while Johnson scored 16 in the half.
Navy had a Bob Carpenter Center record 96 percent
free-throw shooting going 24-25 for the game. The Midshipmen
were led by Erica Hayes who scored 25 points and had 10
rebounds for the game.
