The University of Delaware women`s basketball team (3-0)
defeated Delaware State (0-4) 75-60 on Wednesday at the Bob
Carpenter.
The victory was the Blue Hens third straight to start the
season, which is their best start since the 1992-93 season.
Delaware was led by four starters who scored in double
figures. The Blue Hens trailed by as much as five points in
the first half, but used an 11-0 run to wipe out the deficit
and take a 26-20 lead.
Delaware took a 35-29 lead into halftime behind 10 points
from freshman Megan Dellegrotti (Berwick,
Pa./Berwick). Delaware came out of the half and opened up
the lead to 40-31, but the Hornets responded with a 10-1 run
to tie the game 41. The Blue Hens answered with an 8-0 run
of their own to take the lead for good. Delaware State could
not get any closer than four and fell behind by double
digits at the 5:34 mark.
Delaware was led sophomore Danielle Leyfert
(Vienna, Va./Oakton) who had 20 points, nine rebounds,
four assists and three blocks on the night. Suzannne
Street (Butler, Pa./Butler) chipped in with 19 points
and 11 rebounds while Renee Baker (Wilmington,
Del./Padua Academy) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and
scored 10 points. Delaware State was led by Geannetta
Jackson who had 21 points on the night, Chavonne Stewart
also had 17 points on the night for the Hornets.
