January 11, 1999, Boston, MA
BOSTON -- The University of Delaware women's
basketball captured a long-awaited conference road victory
Monday night as sophomore forward Danielle Leyfert
scored 24 points to lead four scorers in double figures
and pace the Blue Hens to a 78-69 win over Boston University
at Case Gym.
The Blue Hens (7-5, 1-3 America East), who have now
surpassed last year's entire win total, snapped a two-game
losing streak and put to rest another streak that had seen
the team lose 13 straight, conference road games since a
February, 1997 win at Towson.
Delaware sophomore guard Cindy Johnson and
freshman guard Megan Dellegrotti each added 14
points, junior guard Karen Mulligan came off the
bench to hit all five shots from the field and finish with
11 points, and freshman forward Christina Rible tied
a career-high with 14 rebounds to lead the Blue Hens to the
victory.
Boston University (3-9, 0-4) lost its sixth straight game
despite 23 points and seven rebounds from forward Alison
Dixon and 18 points from guard Jamie Nicholls.
The Hens jumped out to a 35-24 halftime lead and stayed
in controlthe entire second half despite several Terrier
runs. Boston University cut the UD lead to five points twice
in the second half, the last time at 53-48 with 8:48 left to
play.
But Chris Seifert followed with a jumper and
Dellegrotti hit three free throws as part of a 9-0 run that
put the Hens back up by 14 points. Dellegrotti, the fifth
leading free throw shooter in the conference, converted 10
of 11 from the line for the game.
The Hens will return home Thursday, Jan. 15 to host
Vermont. victory
