Blue Hens Use
Balance To Knock Off League-Leading
Vermont
NEWARK, DE -- Balance was the
difference for the University of Delaware women's basketball
team Saturday as the Blue Hens put six scorers in double
figures to post their seventh straight victory with an 80-64
America East win over league-leading Vermont Saturday at the
Bob Carpenter Center.
Junior guard Cindy Johnson led the
way with 17 points, Danielle Leyfert and Christina
Rible each chipped in with 12, and three other Blue Hens
netted 10 points apiece in the decisive win.
The Hens won their seventh straight
overall and extended their school record with their seventh
straight America East win to improve to 19-7,
12-5.
Vermont, which got 23 points from
freshman Morgan Hall (on 11 of 17 shooting) and 16 points
from Dawn Cressman, had a 10-game win streak snapped to fall
to 21-5, 14-3. The Hens have now defeated the Catamounts
three straight times at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Hens, who got 10 points each from
Christine Koren, Lindsay Davis (team-high eight
rebounds) and Suzanne Street, have now won eight
straight at home and finished the season 13-1 at the BCC
this year.
Delaware shot 48 percent from the field
(30 of 62), converted on 18 of 19 free throws, and committed
just 12 turnovers to avenge an earlier 94-76 loss at Vermont
back in December.
Vermont center Karalyn Church, the 1999
America East Player of the Year, was held to just 14 points
and five rebounds. Libby Smith pulled a game-high 12
rebounds for the Catamounts.
Vermont led most of the first half before
the Hens scored the last eight points of the stanza to take
a 41-36 lead into intermission. The Hens used an 11-4 run
early in the second half to build the lead to 11 at 55-44
with 12:02 left. Vermont cut the lead to nine at 69-60 with
3:06 left, but the Hens responded with an 11-4 run,
including nine straight free throws down the stretch, to ice
the win.
