Vermont 94, Delaware

December 9, 1999
BURLINGTON, VT -- Host Vermont
used a 19-8 run to close the first half to overcome a
10-point deficit and cruised to a 94-76 women's basketball
victory Thursday night, spoiling the America East opener for
the University of Delaware at Patrick Gymnasium.
The Blue Hens, who led by as much as 10
points early in the first half, dropped their third straight
game to fall to 3-3, 0-1 America East and stayed winless in
four conference openers under head coach Tina Martin.
Vermont, which won its fourth straight game, improved to 7-1
as center Karalyn Church scored 32 points and pulled 10
rebounds.
The Hens, who had their 1998-99 season
ended at Patrick Gymnasium with a loss to Vermont in the
America East quarterfinals, have now lost 12 straight games
in the building.
Christie Lauzon and Rachel Bryan each
chipped in with 17 points for the Catamounts while Morgan
Hall came off the bench to add 14 points and pull 11
rebounds. Hall nailed two three-pointers in the final
minutes of the first half as the Catamounts took a 44-32
lead into intermission.
Junior guard Cindy Johnson
continued to put up big numbers for the Hens, scoring 20
points and dishing out four assists. Danielle Leyfert
added 10 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists while guard
Christine Koren had 10 points and six assists and
added two three-pointers.
"They made their runs and we made our
runs tonight," said Martin, whose team will take on Hartford
in West Hartford, CT Saturday night. "But the run Vermont
made in the first half really broke our backs. We didn't
have an answer for Church (the 1998 America East Player of
the Year) and Hall played well."
Delaware led 16-6 early in the game but
Vermont rallied back and took the lead for good outscoring
the Hens 19-8 over the final 6:32 of the first stanza.
Delaware used a 12-4 run to open the second half to cut the
lead to 51-44, but the Catamounts reeled off 10 of the next
12 points and the Hens could never get closer than 10 the
rest of the way.
