USF Tournament 2nd round
TAMPA, FLA. Host University of South
Florida came from behind to defeat the University of
Delaware womens basketball team 65-61 in the second
round of the USF Tournament Saturday night at The
Ccrall.
The Blue Hens, who lost to Mississippi 90-55 in the
opening round Friday night, led 28-26 at halftime and led
inside the nine-minute mark before South Florida rallied for
the win. The Blue Hens fell to 3-2 on the season while USF,
a first round winner over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, improved
to 5-0.
Delaware junior guard Cindy Johnson led the Blue
Hens once again with 17 points and seven rebounds, upping
her tournament total to 35 points. Junior Danielle
Leyfert bounced back from a scoreless effort vs.
Mississippi to score 11 points while sophomore Christina
Rible, playing just her second game back from a knee
injury, added 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Dione Smith led South Florida with 12 points while Monica
Echeverria had 11 points and nine rebounds. Delaware lost
despite holding a 44-35 rebounding advantage and forcing 26
turnovers.
I thought we played a very solid basketball
game, said Delaware head coach Tina Martin.
Im proud of the way we played tonight and I
think that will help us as the season progresses.
The Hens built a 28-26 lead at halftime and held a slim
lead for most of the early part of the second stanza. But
South Florida rallied and went up for good when Sarah Wilson
hit two free throws with 8:26 left to go up 53-52. Delaware
trailed just 64-61 with 1:21 left to play, but Dione Smith
nailed a free throw and the Hens never got closer.
Delaware will return to action Thursday when it opens the
1999-2000 America East Conference season at Vermont.
