February 19, 2000 Johnson Leads Blue Hens to Fifth Straight Victory
NEWARK, DE -- Junior guard Cindy Johnson led four scorers in double figures with 22 points to pace the University of Delaware to its fifth straight victory with a 76-60 America East women's basketball win over Towson Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens, who also got 16 points and 10 rebounds from forward Christina Rible and 15 points and nine rebounds from forward Danielle Leyfert, improved to 17-7 (10-5 America East), matching their highest win total since going 17-11 in 1992-93. Delaware's 10 conference wins is the most since 1991-92 and the Hens' five straight league wins is the highest since joining America East that same season. Towson (7-16, 5-10), which had overcome a 19-point second half deficit to down Delaware 59-53 back on Jan. 22, got 16 points off the bench from Jill McGowan and 13 points off the bench from Mia Chapman. The Tigers got just 15 points combined from their starting five, including seven from leading scorer Mylisa Pilione. Delaware, which improved to 11-1 at home this season to tie a school record, shot a season-high 55 percent from the field (31 of 56) and did not attempt a three-point shot the entire game. The Hens also held a 39-29 advantage on the boards. After leading 33-27 at halftime, the Hens pulled away early in the second half and went up 40-29 in the first minute of the second stanza. But the Tigers rallied and pulled to within six points at 47-41 with 14:58. But from there, it was all Delaware as the Blue Hens raced away with a 12-0 run, holding the Tigers scoreless for four minutes to go up 59-41 with 11:09 remaining. Towson never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way as the Hens extended the lead to 20 points five different times.
