Leyfert Scores 24
Points, Hits 1,000th to Lead Blue
Hens
BOSTON - Junior forward
Danielle Leyfert exploded for a season-high 24
points, including the 1,000th of her career, as the
University of Delaware moved into sole possession of third
place in the America East standings with a 66-61 women's
basketball win over host Northeastern Saturday afternoon at
Cabot Gym.
Leyfert, a 5-11 forward from Vienna, VA
(Oakton HS), hit on 8 of 17 field goals and converted on 8
of 10 free throws while pulling a team-high nine rebounds to
lead Delaware (16-7, 9-5 America East) to its fourth
straight victory. Northeastern, which entered the day in
third place in the league standings, fell to 13-10, 8-5
despite 28 points from all-league guard Tesha
Tinsley.
The Blue Hens, who also defeated Boston
University Thursday night, swept their two-game Boston road
swing for the first time since joining America East in
1991-92. The Hens, whose four straight America East wins
ties a school record, also swept the season series from
Northeastern for the first time as head coach Tina
Martin led her team to a win at Cabot for the first time
in four tries.
Delaware rallied from an early deficit
that saw the Hens trail 15-4 in the first six minutes of the
contest. But the Hens regrouped thanks to a late 14-0 run
that eventually put them up 33-32 at halftime. The Hens held
Northeastern scoreless for five minutes during the
run.
The Hens led the entire second half,
going up by as much as 14 points at 58-44 with nine minutes
left to play. Leyfert did most of the damage, scoring 12
points in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza.
Northeasten chipped away at the lead and pulled to within
six points at 62-56 with 42 seconds left, but Leyfert and
Christine Koren each connected on two free throws in
the final minute to ice the victory.
"This win is a giant step for our
program," said Martin, whose team matched last year's win
total when the squad went 16-11 and placed fifth in the
final league standings. "This is the first time we've ever
swept any league road trip in America East. It was a just a
great win on the road. Our team really showed tremendous
character coming back from such a big early
deficit."
Cindy Johnson added 14 points,
Christine Cole had seven points and eight rebounds,
and Lindsay Davis sparked the Hens with seven points, six
rebounds, and four assists off the bench.
Tinsley, who scored her 2,000th career
point Thursday night, hit on 11 of 27 shots from the field
and nailed four three-pointers for the Huskies, the
defending America East champions. Garrette Glinton added 12
points off the bench and center Lani Lawrence added 11
points and a team-high nine rebounds for
Northeastern.
Leyfert, Delaware's second leading scorer
at 13.2 points per game, became the second UD 1,000-point
scorer in a week, joining Johnson who hit the mark Feb. 5
vs. Drexel. Leyfert becomes just the fourth player in UD
history to reach the milestone as a junior.
