November 19, 1999 Leyfert, Johnson Key Delaware Basketball Win Over Monmouth
NEWARK, DE -- Juniors Danielle Leyfert and Cindy Johnson combined for 45 points and the University of Delaware dominated on the boards with 29 on the offensive end as the Blue Hens opened the season with an 81-67 non-league women's basketball win over Monmouth Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. Johnson scored 24 points and Leyfert added 21 while Renee Baker had 12 points and pulled a career-high tying 14 rebounds, including nine offensive, as the Hens (1-0) improved to 4-0 in home openers under head coach Tina Martin. Monmouth (0-1), the 1999 Northeast Conference runner-up, got 20 points from guard Amanda Rosato and nine points and 11 rebounds off the bench from forward Katie Kostohryz. The Blue Hens, who are now 9-2 all-time when Leyfert scores 20 or more points, broke open a close game in the second half. Delaware led just 38-35 at halftime and the Hawks cut the lead to 54-48 with 12:41 left to play, but Delaware countered with an 8-1 run, including three pointers from Leyfert and Megan Dellegrotti, to pull away. Delaware shot just 37 percent from the field (30 of 80) and 53 percent from the line (17 of 32) but took advantage of 24 Monmouth turnovers. Delaware held a 55-40 advantage on the boards with 29 offensive boards.
