Delaware upsets Maine, 84-79, in overtime
January 27, 2000

ORONO, ME -- The up-and-down season hit a high note for the University of Delaware women's basketball team Thursday night as the Blue Hens knocked-off America East frontrunner Maine, 84-79, in overtime at Alfond Arena.

It was Delaware's second win in 19 meetings and snapped a 14-game losing skid against the Black Bears. The other win came January 17, 1993 at Alfond Arena, 56-53.

Delaware has now beaten two 1999 NCAA teams in defending America East regular season champion Maine and defending America East tournament champion Northeastern and 1999 WNIT participant New Hampshire this season.

"This is the biggest win in my career, and I have my kids to thank for it," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "Our kids wanted this one really bad.

"I have the utmost respect for Maine. You don't just walk in and beat a team like Maine. Four years ago (Martin's first season), we didn't belong on the floor with them. Tonight, we did."

Christina Rible led Delaware (12-6, 5-4) with a career-high 27 points and 15 rebounds, one shy of her career-high for boards. She shot 12 for 21 from the field to lead four Blue Hens in double-figures. Suzanne Street added a season-high 16 points, while Danielle Leyfert had 14 points and seven assists and Cindy Johnson chipped in 13 points. Both Leyfert and Johnson played all 45 minutes.

Delaware led by seven, 53-46, with 9:22 remaining on a Johnson lay-up that capped a 6-0 run. The Black Bears, however, rallied to take a 62-59 lead with 3:51 left on Kristen McCormick's three-pointer.

Maine had a chance to break a 68-68 tie with 23 seconds remaining, but Amy Vachon missed a free throw that would have completed a three-point play.

The Blue Hens missed the final shot of regulation after a time out.

In the overtime period, Delaware forged a 76-74 lead with 1:26 left on Leyfert's jumper. Delaware made 8 of 12 free throws the rest of the way, while holding Maine to just two field goals.

Jamie Cassidy had 36 points for Maine (11-7, 7-2) in a losing effort, 24 of them in the second half. She also had 13 rebounds and four blocks.

Delaware stays on the road to face New Hampshire Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
