Blue Hens Fall
Short in Search of First America East
Crown
BURLINGTON, VT -The
University of Delawares run to its first ever America
East womens basektball title fell short Friday night
at Maines Jamie Cassidy scored 25 points to lead the
Black Bears to a 74-66 win in the semifinals at the
University of Vermonts Patrick Gymnasium.
The No. 3 seed Blue Hens (21-8), who will await a
potential Womens NIT invitation Sunday, had a
nine-game win streak snapped despite 17 points and eight
rebounds from Christina Rible and 13 points and eight
rebounds from Danielel Leyfert.
It was the Blue Hens first trip to the America East
semifinals since 1993 and their 21 wins was the most by a UD
team since 1989-90. No. 2 seed Maine (20-9) advances to
Saturdays America East title game vs. No. 1 seed
Vermont (24-5) at 3 p.m. It will be Maines sixth
straight trip to the league title game. Vermont advanced
with a 69-56 win over defending league champion Northeastern
earlier Friday night.
Delaware fell behind early in their battle with Maine and
could never quite catch up on the lost ground. The Hens
trailed just 14-10 eight minutes into the game before the
Black Bears went off on a 17-1 tear on the way to a 42-27
halftime cushion.
The Blue Hen clawed back, cutting the lead to nine points
at 44-35 two minutes into the second half, but Maine
responded again with a 7-0 run and led by at least 11 the
rest of the way.
Maine also got 13 points from guard Kristen McCormick
while Cassidy added eight rebounds and Amy Vachon chipped in
with eight assists.
Im proud of our kids, said Delaware
fourth-year head coach Tina Martin, whose team was
6-21 just two years ago. We played with a lot of heart
tonight like we have all season. We just came up a little
short. Its that simple. Maine played like the veteran
team they are. Theyve been there before and they
played that way. They were the better team tonight. Our team
didnt lay down all year.
Maine held Delawares leading scorer, first team
all-conference junior guard Cindy Johnson, in check
all night and that was the difference. Johnson, who entered
with a team-leading 17.6 points per game average, hit just 1
of 8 shots from the field and finished with points. She was
held in single digits for the first time since scoring six
points in a loss at Towson Jan. 22.
