January 9, 2000 Blue Hens Let Go of Early Lead; Fall to Hofstra
HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The University of Delaware jumped out to a 14-point first half lead but could not hold on as Hofstra rallied for a 72-68 win in women's basketball action at Hofstra Arena Sunday afternoon. Junior Cindy Johnson, playing in front of family and friends from nearby Far Rockaway, NY, led all scorers with 21 points for Delaware before fouling out in the closing seconds. Megan Dellegrotti added 11 points off of the bench. "We did not play well defensively today," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "Hofstra came up with big shots and we were not able to finish the opportunities we had." The Blue Hens (8-5, 2-3 America East) scored the first 12 points of the game en route to a 24-10 lead with 8:30 remaining in the first half. The run was sparked by Danielle Leyfert, who scored seven points during the outburst. However, Leyfert would be held to just two points the rest of the afternoon. The Dutchwomen (8-4, 2-2 America East) rallied, however, to take their first lead of the afternoon, 34-33, with 18:04 to play on a layup by Lisa Harris. Delaware regained the lead twice after that before Hofstra took the lead for good with 6:20 to play on a pair of Meredith Pine free throws, 53-52. Hofstra was led by Jennifer Brickey's 20 points off the bench, while Noreen Duffy added 11. Hofstra shot 15 for 25 from the field in the second half. The Blue Hens were plagued by poor foul shooting. Delaware shot just 14 for 26 from the free throw line for the game. The game marked the first women's basketball game at the new 5,124-seat Hofstra Arena. Delaware will host Canisius in a non-conference match-up Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
