February 24, 2000 Johnson Sparks Blue Hens to Sixth Straight Win, Over Hartford
NEWARK, DE -- Junior guard Cindy Johnson surpassed 20 points for the 12th time this season with a game-high 22 points to lead the University of Delaware to its sixth straight, a 75-53 America East women's basketball victory over Hartford Thursday night. The Blue Hens (18-7, 11-5), who also won a school-record sixth straight America East game, also got 14 points and 11 rebounds from junior forward Danielle Leyfert and 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench from Lindsay Davis. The 18 wins is the most for the Blue Hens since going 18-11 to win the East Coast Conference title in 1990-91. Hartford (13-12, 8-8), which shot just 33 percent from the field (18 of 54) and committed 23 turnovers, got 11 points from Cheri Eleazer and 10 points off the bench from both Janeka Lopp and Kenitra Johnson. Johnson also pulled a team-high nine rebounds. The Blue Hens, who remain in third place in the America East standings heading into the final week of the regular season, were in control the entire game and held the Hawks to just five points in the first 11 minutes of the game to take an 11-5 lead. Delaware held a 35-20 cushion at halftime as Hartford shot just 7 of 25 from the field for the stanza. Hartford pulled to within nine points at 37-28 two minutes into the second half, but the Hens answered with a 17-4 to put the game away. Davis scored seven points to key the runs for the Hens. Hartford never got closer than 20 points the final 10 minutes of the game. Delaware will host league-leading Vermont Saturday in its final home game of the season.
