December 11, 1999

WEST HARTFORD, CT -- Sophomore Christina Rible (Little Silver, NJ/Red Bank Regional HS) had career-highs with 15 points and 16 rebounds to lead four players in double-figures as Delaware evened its America East record with a 73-61 win over Hartford at The Chase Family Center Saturday night.

"Anytime you win a conference game, it is a big win," said Delaware coach Tina Martin, whose team snapped a three-game losing skid. "We played an outstanding first half. We may have lost our composure a little the first six or seven minutes of the second half. But, our seniors stepped up and hit key free throws down the stretch."

After the Hawks scored the game's first points, Delaware went on a 13-0 run to jump out to an early double-digit lead for the second straight game. Senior forward Suzanne Street sparked the run with seven of the 13 points.

However, unlike Thursday night's loss at Vermont when the Hens lost an early 10-point lead, Delaware (4-3, 1-0) kept building on this lead. Rible, making her first start of the season, scored on a lay-up with 10:50 remaining in the half to cap a 12-6 spurt to give Delaware a 25-9 lead.

Hartford made a run of its own, cutting the Delaware lead to nine at 27-18 on an Angie Pezzetta jumper with 6:44 left in the half.

The Blue Hens extended the advantage to 41-21 by halftime. Delaware scored 14 of the final 17 points of the first half, holding Hartford without a field goal after the Pezzetta jumper.

The Hawks, who fell to 5-3, 1-1 in America East under first-year head coach Jennifer Rizzotti, got as close as eight in the second half at 67-59 with 1:23 remaining. However, Delaware, which struggled at the foul line for the game (15 for 28), hit 6 of 8 free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

Delaware also got double-digit scoring from Cindy Johnson with 14 points, 10 of which came in the first half, Street with 13, 11 in the first half, and senior Christine Koren with 11 points. Koren, a transfer from Seton Hall, also added five assists and three steals, while Johnson, a junior from Far Rockaway, NY, recorded six assists to tie a career-high.

Megan Dellegrotti extended her streak of games with a three-pointer to 14 on her only points of the night.

Jeneka Lopp led Hartford with 15 points, while LaQuanda Brickhouse added 13 points and Pezzetta finished with 12 points. Hartford shot just 1 for 15 from three-point range for the night.

The Blue Hens will take a break for exams until next Saturday, December 18, when they head downstate to take on rival Delaware State at Memorial Hall in Dover. Game time is 2 p.m.
