RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware setter Megan Welch (Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading the Blue Hens to a 2-0 record and the conference regular season championship last week.

During Delaware’s first match of the week on Thursday, Welch recorded 69 assists against William & Mary. With that performance, she tied her career-high for assists in a match. Her total was also the most by any player in the CAA during a four-game match this year.

She also held the previous high with 62 against VCU in a 3-1 victory over the Rams last month.

On Friday, Welch continued her successful week, notching a match-high 50 assists in the Hens’ 3-1 win over VCU during the team’s regular season finale. With that effort, she improved her career total to 4,040. In doing so, she became just the second Blue Hen in team history to top 4,000 career assists. Nikki Brassell is the school’s all-time leader with 4,538.

During both matches last week, Welch also recorded double-doubles after posting 16 digs against the Tribe before adding 10 more against the Rams.

With her two double-doubles, she finished the regular season with a team-high 19, including seven straight and 12 in the squad’s last 13 matches.

On the season, Welch leads the CAA with 1,501 assists and a 13.17 assists-per-game average. She is also third on the team with 25 aces and 300 digs.

She previously earned Player of the Week accolades after garnering the Most Valuable Player award in the Coastal Carolina Tournament. During that invitational, she recorded 140 assists and 33 digs to help the Hens win their third tournament of the year.

Led by Welch’s performance this season, Delaware captured its first regular season conference championship in 12 years after finishing the regular season with a 28-4 record including a 12-2 mark in the CAA.

This marks the sixth weekly honor for the Blue Hens. Along with Welch’s two awards, Colleen Walsh, Steph Barry, and Kelly Gibson all were named the Player of the Week once this year, while freshman Katie Dennehy earned Rookie of the Week honors.

This week, Welch shared the Player of the Week honor with Lauren DeTurk of Northeastern. William & Mary’s Erin Skipper was also selected by the CAA as the conference’s Rookie of the Week.

The Blue Hens return to action on Saturday for the second round of the CAA Tournament when they face the winner of the William & Mary - James Madison first-round match at 5 p.m. in the Carpenter Sports Building.
