RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware setter Megan Welch (Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week after leading the Blue Hens to the Caravelle Resort Invitational Championship in South Carolina over the weekend.
During the tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina, Welch (at right) was named the Most Valuable Player after recording three straight double-doubles.
On Friday, she had 52 assists and 13 digs against Buffalo, while she added 43 assists and 10 digs against Gardner-Webb. Then, in the championship match on Saturday, she posted 45 assists and 10 digs against Coastal Carolina.
For the week, Welch recorded a team-high 177 assists. She also placed second on the team with 37 digs while leading the Hens to a 3-1 record.
This season Welch has earned All-Tournament honors for her play in the Delaware, Miami, and Coastal Carolina Invitationals. One of the team’s senior co-captains, she has led the Hens to a 13-2 record.
Welch currently leads the team with 639 assists and is second on the squad with 118 digs. She has also posted 21 blocks and 15 service aces this season.
During the week, Welch moved into third place on Delaware’s all-time assists list with 3,178. She now stands just 91 assists away from second place, while she is 1,360 shy of Nikki Brassell’s school record.
Along with Welch, Northeastern's Britney Brown was honored by the CAA as the conference’s Rookie of the Week.
The Blue Hens return home on Wednesday when they open conference play against Towson at 7 p.m.
