RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware outside hitter Colleen Walsh (Cleveland, OH/Regina) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week after leading the Blue Hens to a 3-0 record last week.
During Delaware’s three matches, Walsh notched a team-high 58 kills. She also added 12 digs, three blocks, and an ace.
Against UMBC on Tuesday, Walsh recorded 18 kills. During that match, she set Delaware’s career kills record with 1,562, passing Karen Kunselman who had 1,553 from 1993-96.
Walsh followed up her record-setting performance by posting 21 kills against George Mason and 19 against James Madison. She has now recorded 10 or more kills in 18 of the team’s 20 matches this year.
On the season, Walsh leads the conference with 310 kills. Her 4.49 kills-per-game average is also the highest in the CAA, while she is fourth in the league with a .286 hitting percentage.
For Walsh, it is the sixth CAA weekly honor of her career. She was named the league’s Rookie of the Week three times in 2004, while she was Player of the Week twice last season.
A co-captain on the squad, Walsh has led Delaware to the team’s best start in program history. The Hens stand at 18-2, including 3-0 in the CAA.
Walsh is the third Blue Hen to earn CAA Player of the Week accolades this season. Stephanie Barry was named a Co-Player of the Week on August 27th, while Megan Welch earned the honor on September 17.
Along with Walsh, James Madison’s Lindsay Callahan was honored by the CAA as the conference’s Rookie of the Week.
The Blue Hens return home on Friday when they host Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m.
