CAPE COD, MA -- University of Delaware outside hitter Colleen Walsh (Cleveland, OH/Regina) was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Player of the Week after leading the Blue Hens to a 3-0 record last week.
During Delaware’s three matches, Walsh notched a team-high 58 kills. She also added 12 digs, three blocks, and an ace.
Against UMBC on Tuesday, Walsh recorded 18 kills. During that match, she set Delaware’s career kills record with 1,562, passing Karen Kunselman who had 1,553 from 1993-96.
Walsh followed up her record-setting performance by posting 21 kills against George Mason and 19 against James Madison. She has now recorded 10 or more kills in 18 of the team’s 20 matches this year.
For Walsh, it was her second honor this week. On Monday, she was also named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week.
On the season, Walsh leads the conference with 310 kills. Her 4.49 kills-per-game average is also the highest in the CAA, while she is fourth in the league with a .286 hitting percentage.
A co-captain on the squad, Walsh has led Delaware to the team’s best start in program history. The Hens stand at 18-2, including 3-0 in the CAA.
Along with Walsh, the ECAC honored Kerry Smith from Post University as the Division II Player of the Week, while Western New England College’s Ashley O’Keefe earned the Division III accolades.
The ECAC, which is the largest conference in the United States, has 312 member schools from Maine to North Carolina.
The Blue Hens return home on Friday when they host Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m.
