NEWARK, DE -- Kelly Gibson recorded her 1,000th career dig and extended her double-double streak to nine matches as the University of Delaware volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (30-14, 30-14, 30-9) victory over UNC Wilmington on Saturday night at Viera Court.
During the match, Gibson (at right) posted 11 kills and 10 digs. With her performance, she became just the fifth Blue Hen in school history to have 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. Jennifer Wanner, Emily Rome, Kathy Shaw, and Joanna Dusza are the only other members of that exclusive club.
Katie Dennehy also had another outstanding contest, posting a match-high 14 kills. She also added five blocks and a .483 attack percentage.
During the match, UNC Wilmington jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first game. After that, Delaware (22-4, 7-2 CAA) took control. The Hens recorded nine straight points, led by two kills each from Dennehy and Gibson.
Following that point, the Hens only trailed three times in the entire match, dropping behind 1-0, 2-1, and 4-3 in the second set.
During the second frame, after trailing 4-3, Delaware ran off seven straight points. Stephanie Barry led the charge, notching three service aces over that span.
In the third game, the Hens never trailed, getting out to an early 6-0 lead. After the Seahawks cut the deficit to seven at 16-9, Delaware recorded the last 14 points of the game. Dennehy posted five kills during that stretch, while Gibson added two others.
Delaware tallied 10 blocks in the contest. Paige Erickson led the way with eight, including one solo stop. Kelly Gibson also had three, while Michelle LaLonde joined the block party with two of her own. She also had eight kills and a team-best .615 attack percentage.
Steph Barry led the Hens with 25 digs, while Megan Welch posted a match-high 36 assists and added 11 digs. Colleen Walsh also chipped in with eight kills and one block.
UNC Wilmington (7-18, 1-8) was led by Ashlyn Morris who had a team-high 15 digs. Jill Hoeck notched 20 assists, while Rachael Caricato and Lindsey Strucko each had five kills.
With the win, Delaware has now captured its last eight matches with the Seahawks. All eight of those wins have come by a 3-0 score.
The Blue Hens return to action on Friday when they travel to Towson to take on the Tigers at 7 p.m.
