NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware volleyball team topped Towson, 3-0 (30-16, 30-13, 33-31), in the team’s conference opener on Wednesday night at Viera Court.
The victory extended the Hens’ winning streak to four games after they swept Buffalo, Gardner-Webb, and Coastal Carolina during the Caravelle Resort Invitational over the weekend.
The Hens (14-2, 1-0 CAA) were led by senior Colleen Walsh (at right) who recorded a game-high 15 kills. Kelly Gibson also posted 13 kills, while Michelle LaLonde added 10 kills with a .474 attack percentage.
Delaware jumped out quickly in the first two games, winning by a combined 60-29 score. In the third game, the Hens held a commanding 21-15 advantage before the Tigers clawed their way back into the game.
Towson (3-11, 0-1 CAA) grabbed a 30-29 lead in the third game, but Walsh and Katie Dennehy answered with back-to-back kills. After a service error by Towson, Gibson slammed home the game-winner.
Stephanie Barry posted a match-high 22 digs for the Hens, while Megan Welch added 37 assists. Barry and Welch also tied for the team-lead with three service aces apiece.
The Tigers were led by Maddie Haseltine, who posted a double-double with 12 digs and 11 kills. Ally Perko added 10 kills for Towson, while Katee Luecke chipped in with 26 assists.
Delaware has now won two straight matches against Towson for the first time since the Hens swept the Tigers in 1997. Towson entered the game having won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the two schools.
With the win, Delaware has now beaten a team from every conference in the NCAA’s East Region. Earlier this season, the Hens beat Coastal Carolina from the Big South Conference, Boston College from the ACC, and Delaware State from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
In all, the Hens’ 14 wins this season have now come against teams from fourteen different conferences.
Delaware returns to action on Friday at 7 p.m. when the squad faces Fairleigh Dickinson at Viera Court.
