Welch and Gibson Both Post Double-Doubles to Lead the Blue Hens Past Towson, 3-0

TOWSON, MD -- Kelly Gibson and Megan Welch each recorded a double-double to help lead the University of Delaware volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-26, 30-17, 30-20) sweep of Towson on Friday night.

During the win, Gibson notched a team-high 20 digs to go along with 11 kills. It was her tenth consecutive double-double and her twelfth on the season.

Delaware (23-4, 8-2 CAA) was also helped by Colleen Walsh and Katie Dennehy, who both posted 12 kills. Dennehy, the current CAA Rookie of the Week, also added two digs and a block for the Hens.

Delaware has now won three straight matches against Towson, including both this season. It is the first time the Hens have swept the Tigers in the regular season since 1997. Overall, Towson entered the match having won 10 of the last 12 meetings between the two schools.

In the match, Megan Welch (at right) posted 11 digs and a team-high 35 assists for the Hens. Steph Barry chipped in with 19 digs, while Paige Erickson added six kills, four assists, and a block. Erickson also led the Hens with a .429 attack percentage.

Greta Gibboney, Molly Rand, and Jess Chason also recorded an ace apiece.

During the match, the Hens trailed only three times, all in the first game. The teams also battled to just six ties, five of which came in the first frame.

Throughout the contest, Delaware held a .197 - .106 advantage in attack percentage, while the Tigers posted seven more blocks than the Hens.

Towson (6-20, 2-8) was led by Maddie Haseltine, who notched a match-high 13 kills. Missy Rohrbaugh paced the Tigers with 18 digs, while Kristina Swan had 17 assists.

The Blue Hens return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host Lehigh at Viera Court in the team’s last non-conference match of the season.
