NEWARK, DE -- Members of the University of Delaware volleyball team volunteered with the Special Olympics Fall Festival held in the Delaware Field House last Saturday.
During the event, the Blue Hens helped in the athletic village, officiated volleyball matches, and even put on an impromptu clinic for those in attendance.
Colleen Walsh, who works closely with the Special Olympics, helped out during the festivities and was joined by fellow senior Megan Welch as well as junior Molly Rand, sophomore Michelle LaLonde, and freshmen Jess Chason, Paige Erickson, and Greta Gibboney.
The team took the time to volunteer during one of only two weekends that the team was not playing during their fall season.
"It was a terrific afternoon for all of us," said associate head coach Cindy Gregory, who also attended along with head coach Bonnie Kenny. "Bonnie and I were very proud of the players that gave up only their second free Saturday this fall to give so generously."
The Blue Hen volleyball team has made it a point to use their free time to serve the community. They made trips to the Newark Manor Nursing Home and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newark last season and have remained busy in the community all year long.
