CORAL GABLES, FL -- After defeating Loyola, 3-0 (31-29, 30-19, 30-24), in the semifinals of the Hurricane Invitational, the University of Delaware volleyball team fell to Miami, 3-0 (28-30, 26-30, 22-30), in the championship match on Saturday night.
The loss was the first for the Hens after they extended their winning streak to 10 by defeating the Ramblers during the first match of the day.
Senior Megan Welch (at right) led the Hens, earning All-Invitational honors after posting 123 assists during the two-day tournament. She had 42 assists, four digs, and a block in the championship match, while she added 31 assists and seven digs against Loyola.
Sophomore Stephanie Barry also earned All-Tournament honors after tallying a team-high 71 digs during the invitational. She also had five service aces for the Hens.
For Barry, it was her third All-Tournament selection after she was named to the All-Invitational squads for both the Delaware and New Orleans Tournaments earlier this season.
Colleen Walsh also had a strong showing in Miami, tallying 38 kills in three games. She also led the team with seven service aces and added 16 digs and five blocks.
In the championship match, Molly Rand posted a team-high 13 kills, while Barry led the Hens with 27 digs. Freshman Greta Gibboney had eight digs and led the team with two service aces.
Miami (6-3) was led by Bridget Bomhack, who recorded 14 kills. Ashley Woods, who was named the Invitational’s Most Valuable Player, added seven kills and four blocks.
During the first match of the day, Delaware was led by Walsh, who recorded 14 kills and four aces. Michelle LaLonde also tallied four aces and a game-high nine blocks.
Loyola (2-6) was led by Sarah Singer, who posted a double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs. Keily Zins added 12 digs and eight kills for the Ramblers.
The Blue Hens return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they travel up the Main Line to take on Villanova.
