RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware junior outside hitter Kelly Gibson (Taos, NM/Taos) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week after leading the Blue Hens to a 3-0 record last week.
During Delaware’s three matches, Gibson notched a team-high 50 kills. She also added 31 digs, six blocks, and three aces.
Against James Madison on Friday, Gibson recorded a season-high 22 kills. It tied the second most kills by a Blue Hen in a match this season, trailing only Colleen Walsh’s 30-kill performance against William & Mary.
Gibson also posted her 13th double-double of the season after having 19 digs against the Dukes. She also set a new season-high with her three aces against Lehigh on Tuesday.
After recording 14 kills against George Mason on Saturday, she has now recorded 10 or more kills in 13 straight matches and 18 of the last 19.
On the season, Gibson is fourth on the team with 284 kills and second with 299 digs. Her 2.96 kills-per-game average is also third highest on the squad.
For Gibson, it is the third weekly honor of her career. Last season, she was named the CAA Player of the Week on October 30, while she earned Rookie of the Week honors once as a freshman in 2005.
With the honor, Gibson becomes the fifth different Blue Hen to earn weekly CAA honors this season. Colleen Walsh, Steph Barry, and Megan Welch previously were selected Players of the Week, while freshman Katie Dennehy was named the Rookie of the Week on October 22.
Along with Gibson, Northeastern’s Caitlin Tittl and VCU’s Belinda Behncke-Biney were honored by the CAA as the co-Rookies of the Week.
The Blue Hens return to action on Thursday when they travel to Williamsburg to face William & Mary at 7 p.m.
